Surveying the Landscape Practice profile

J. Kevin McGraw, MD, RPVI, FSIR Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates Columbus, Ohio

How would you define your practice model? IR with some diagnostic responsibilities for vascular imaging. We cover seven hospitals and one outpatient vein center.

How many IRs, NPs/PAs, technologists and support staff do you have? We have 11 full-time employed and two part-time IRs. In addition, we have eight advanced practice providers and dozens of technologists and nurses spread out across the hospitals we cover.

Are you in a rural area, or more urban area? Both. The main hospital is in a more urban area. This is staffed with three IRs and two APPs. We also have one IR in the IR clinic office daily. We also have a late shift IR in-house from 4–11 p.m.

What services and therapies make up the bulk of your practice? Basically everything. We cover areas like oncology, spine, GI, GU, women’s health and varicose veins.

What support do you have when you find yourself in a challenging case? I have many colleagues around to help and offer advice.

Do you ever do interdisciplinary cases (i.e., with vascular, GI, oncology, etc.)? Rarely.

How do you fit into the care of your community as a whole? Patients who live in remote areas are frequently transported to our hospital to receive IR services.

If you could add one thing to your practice, what would it be? Marketing support from our hospital system.

What is one thing you wish you could change from your current practice? It would be nice to not have call responsibilities.

What is your favorite aspect of your practice? The variety of cases performed on a daily basis.

What advice do you have for a trainee considering practicing in your type of practice setting? As a new IR it is always good to have more experienced doctors around who can help and mentor you.

What made you choose this practice model? The size of the practice, the ability to have an outpatient office, and the variety and complexity of cases.
