Company Philosophy: We will remember our heritage. Our founder and innovator, Herbert Malarkey had a clear understanding of the value of fair and honest dealings with employees, vendors, customers and the communities in which we operate. Michael Malarkey, our visionary, taught us the value of quality. Our products will perform as promised. Our community trusts our products to protect their homes, families and businesses and we will not disappoint. We are a family company. Like a family we will lift each other up and rise together. Opportunities will be offered to all that are willing to accept responsibility. No one will be asked to carry more than any of us are willing to bear. Engage business partners rather than create adversaries. We will seek partners in our business dealings. It is better to have a partner than to defeat adversaries. Our employees are our most valuable resources. We recognize and value their knowledge and contributions to our success. What we do is as much an art as a science. We recognize that the human component, pride and ownership of quality, is what sets us apart. We will strive to improve our business, our products, our family, our communities and ourselves. We will not be afraid to fail. Without risk there is no reward. Failures must be recognized, understood and learned from. It is more important to focus our efforts and overcome our shortcomings rather than placing blame. Reason and logic will prevail. Our actions will be driven by understanding, purpose and judgment. The answer to the question “why” will never be “because”. Malarkey will chart our own course. While it is important that we understand our industry and our competitors, we will only produce what we believe provides our community with the best value

8 Community Associations Journal | January/February 2018

The 2018 Washington State Legislative Session started on January 8th. For the first time in five years, the Democrats have control of all three chambers of the State Government: the Governors office, the House of Representatives, and the Senate.

When Senator Manka Dhingra (45-Kirkland) won her election on November 7th the Democrats secured control of the Senate with a one-seat advantage. A Republican, Andy Hill, who passed away in 2015, had previously held the position. With a slim margin and another election occurring in November, where half of the senate will be up for re-election - including the 45th again - the legislature is expected to be a tough battle group in 2018. As the Democrats fight to show why they should stay in power, the Republicans attempt to show how they deserve to be in the majority again.

Even though the Senate has been dominating the news cycle this last election in Washington, keep an eye on the House of Representatives. The Democrats will also be defending a slim two- seat majority and all 98 House members will be up for re-election this year.

Speaker Frank Chopp (43-Fremont) has been leading the Democrats as Speaker for 19 strong years, and he will be defending his title and looking to increase Democratic control this November. However, leaders of the Republican Caucus are hoping that if they can run strong campaigns in key swing districts, they will be able to gain control of the House for the first time this century.

In other words, the Washington State Legislature has slim majorities in both the House and the Senate, which means that during this Legislative Session any legislation that is passed will be hard-fought since every single vote will count.
