“I want other nontraditional students to be encouraged that

there is a place for them, and they will find it."

She took the time each year to write essays, complete applications and fulfill all requirements needed to become an eligible candidate for scholarships she found on and off campus. One of those being an OSCPA Educational Foundation scholarship.

“It’s a very small investment in time and effort in comparison to the benefit received,” she said. "I was able to graduate debt free.” Spillman also turned to OSU’s

Nontraditional Student Organization and found a place where she could relate to other students with similar challenges. She began attending meetings and later served as vice president and president of the organization, which became an important resource for her life on campus.

Although the many challenges for nontraditional students can be difficult to navigate, Spillman is proof that they are possible to overcome. “She was juggling much more on her plate than the average student but never once brought that up or used it as an excuse,” Cox said. Spillman’s advice to other

nontraditional students? Tink, but do not overthink, and move to action.

“You know, I could still be housekeeping. If I had still been thinking, I would have never gotten started,” Spillman said. Spillman wants her story to be an inspiration to encourage other nontraditional students to pursue their dreams. “Tere are going to be sacrifices along the way, but this time of your life will not last forever and the rewards outweigh the sacrifices. “Tere is a place for everyone, no matter what age,” she said. “I want other nontraditional students to be encouraged that there is a place for them, and they will find it.”
