OSCPA MEMBERS UNLEASH CREATIVITY IN WRITING… BOOK YOUR SUMMER

WITH THE SOCIETY By Amy L. Welch, APR, CAE

life in Oklahoma during the early to mid 1900s. Te Chronicles of Oklahoma, the official journal of the Oklahoma Historical Society, said “Warner’s book was a valuable source for information about early days in Guthrie and the Oklahoma business community between the two world wars,” according to the Tulsa World. While several Oklahoma CPAs have written or contributed to scholarly publications, accounting textbooks and, of course, CPAFOCUS, a few others have struck out on their own and published books —some offer financial advice and inspiration and others offer stories, personal and fictional.

I As the days turn longer and the temperatures

get higher, take time wo relax with these books written by OSCPA members.

Kevin D. Howard, CPA “Te Chisholm Trail to Dodge City” Kevin Howard, CPA, a principal/shareholder with Smith Carney & Co., PC in Ardmore, a 100% VIP Company, wrote his first book about a 14-year-

old Texas boy who joins a cattle drive at the Red River in 1880. Te book tells the stories of his day-to-day adventures on his way to Dodge City, Kansas. Howard, a member for more than 41 years, wrote, “Te timeline is real down to the phases of the moon. Te stage stations, trading posts, river crossings, terrain and topography are all actual.” In a review on Amazon.com, one reader wrote, “A truly enjoyable book, chocked full of history. As you join the main character on his journey, you feel as though you’re on the trail driving cattle right with him. A true adventure… worth the read!” Howard said his inspiration came from his upbringing. “I’ve always been a big fan of that era,” he said. “My grandfather’s ranch is actually on the Chisholm Trail southeast of Waurika,

n 1968, Ross T. Warner, CPA, a past OSCPA Chairman of the Board, published his autobiography, “Oklahoma Boy,” a look at

where I used to ride horses, herd cattle, etc. as a boy. My great-grandfather moved to the Spanish Fort area as a boy in 1872 when the big cattle drives started. I never found any evidence to say that he went on a cattle drive, but if I had lived there at that time and place and at that age, I would have gone.” Howard is finishing his second book and hopes to have it out by the end of summer. “My wife and I have owned land in northern Logan County for almost 30 years,” he explained. “Tis book is about two cowboys in 1887 who see the end of the cattle drives on the Chisholm Trail and decide to start their own place. Tey end up participating in the 89er Land Run and settling on our places. Te story is about the trials and tribulations of staying on the land for the five years required to get title to the land.” Howard appears to be aiming more for historical accuracy than appetizing descriptions. “I have world events for each of the years 1887 through 1895 that tell what is going on in the rest of the country while these people are scratching out a living, eating armadillos and rattlesnakes in order to survive.”
