SPOTLIGHT
PACKAGING We Couldn’t Put Down!
To better understand shoppers’ shopping habits and highlight the ways food brands can communicate the value of their products through innovative packaging, the 2020 Food Packaging & Consumer Behavior Report surveyed more than 1,100 American consumers about their in-store and online food-product shopping behaviors. Of those surveyed, 47 percent tried a brand they were not previously familiar with. What were their reasons for trying something new? While 28 percent said it was due to a “unique design,” 27 percent chose based on “eco-friendly packaging” and 23 percent for the label’s language. We went in search of packaging examples that exemplified these attributes, and we found these two winners.
Lonohana Estate Chocolate
Authentic, sustainable, luxurious—Lonohana Estate Chocolate hit just the right note with their packaging design.
Hawaii-based Lonohana Estate Chocolate dedicates an entire page of their website to the story behind their packaging design. That makes sense since the design has won numerous awards. Lonohana, which grows their own chocolate on the island of O’ahu, is the result of two families’ shared dream to create a vertically integrated chocolate company in the United States. The company controls the entire product life cycle by growing cacao and crafting small batches of chocolate bars in Honolulu. The story of the people and the place that produce the chocolate is one of the brand’s biggest selling points. Well, that and the taste. The packaging reflects the

authenticity of the brand, is made of recycled materials, and appeals to the consumer’s sense of touch when opened, delivering a premium feel. The interlocking design was inspired by a Japanese gift box and uses no glue for environmental reasons. To protect the chocolate, they use thick, environmentally friendly foil and hand wrap every bar. Lonohana wanted their orchard
to be woven into the design, so they include deeply embossed cacao leaves—which deliver some of that premium feel—on textured, crisp, white recycled paper. Every bar is encased in this blind embossed outer wrapping. Finally, to label the five different
chocolate bar flavors, there are five different printed bellybands, each with a different colorful accent representing each of Lonohana’s flavors. The result is a sophisticated design that feels authentically Hawaiian, perfectly represents the brand story, and is hard to put down —kind of like great chocolate.

Tea Drops
Shape, colors, story—Tea Drops’ cylindrical packaging and fun design sets it apart from all other tea packaging.
The first Tea Drops were
This packaging won us over the moment we saw it. The brand’s position, as stated on their website by founder Sashee Chandran— “When you buy Tea Drops, you support organic production, fair trade wages, clean water aid, and American made”—is clearly evident on their packaging by the use of official icons and logos. It also explains what “tea magic” is: tea without the waste of a tea bag. Tea Drops is a proprietary air-compressed loose-leaf tea mold format that brews a high-quality cup of tea, representing about 20 percent less waste than traditional tea bag packaging.
packaged in sliding wooden boxes inspired by the tea chests of the 16th century. “If I would have gone the traditional route, which is tea in cardboard boxes on shelves, I wouldn’t have had the creative freedom to think about this,” Chandra told the hosts of CNBC Make It. The cylindrical package invites the consumer to rotate it completely around, reading about the product and enjoying the warm colors and whimsical design, which includes a touch of gold foil to give it a deluxe feel. The authenticity of the brand
resonates with today’s health- conscious consumers, including celebrities such as Oprah and Chrissy Teigen, who posted an unboxing video on Twitter of the tea sampler wooden box. Additional packaging of Tea Drops products includes beautifully designed and custom-printed boxes aptly titled Work from Home Care Package, the Birthday Box, and Deluxe Tea Sampler.
