Four ADA members elected to Congress Voters elected four ADA members to the 115th Congress November 8, all with wide margins of victory

Dr. Drew Ferguson, newly elected to represent Georgia’s 3rd congres- sional district, will join incumbent Reps. Mike Simpson, Idaho 2nd, Paul Gosar, Arizona 4th, and Brian Babin, Texas 36th, in the Repub- lican majority in the House of Representatives when Congress convenes in January.

Dr. Simpson was elected to his 10th term in Congress with 63 percent of his dis- trict’s votes. For his fourth term, Dr. Gosar captured 71 percent and Dr. Babin ran unopposed in both the primary and general elections in winning a second term. For his first term, Dr. Ferguson received 68 percent of the votes. In their congres- sional service to date, Reps. Babin, Gosar and Simpson have been advocates for oral health and have sponsored numerous oral health bills.

The American Dental Political Action Committee supported the campaigns of the four candidates, all general dentists. During the 2016 election cycle, ADPAC spent more than $1.9 million in supporting more than 350 candidates running for federal office. Cincinnati Dentist Chosen President-

Elect of the ADA Joseph P. Crowley, DDS to assume ADA presidency in 2017

Dr. Joseph P. Crowley, a general dentist practic- ing in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the new president-elect of the ADA. Dr. Crowley was recently elected during a meeting of the ADA House of Delegates (House) in Denver. He will assume the role of president of the ADA in October 2017.

New 2016 ADA Sedation and Anesthesia Guidelines

The Sedation and Anesthesia Guidelines recently were amended and approved by the ADA House of Delegates via Resolution 37H-2016. The two ADA documents, “Guidelines for the Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia by Dentists” and “Guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students” may be downloaded from the ADA website at ada.org/en/about-the-ada/ada-positions-policies- and-statements/#Anesthesia. This updated ADA policy replaces both the 2007 and 2012 versions of the Sedation and Anesthesia Guidelines.

Please note that dentists must comply with their state laws, rules and/or regula- tions when providing sedation and anesthesia. The Sedation and Anesthesia Guidelines are ADA policy developed to assist dentists in the delivery of safe and effective sedation and anesthesia and do not supersede state law.

Currently, the Missouri Dental Practice Act differentiates between oral and IV routes for permits. These new guidelines will be shared by the ADA with Dental Boards across the country, and each state will determine any changes to their existing rules.
