SPECIALTY CONTRACTORS MARKET FOCUS

Dynalectric Completes Electrical Systems Contract on Port of Long Beach Project

AGC member specialty contractor firms are building some

of the most complex, cutting edge projects in California, often working alongside AGC general contractor members to create landmarks for today and tomorrow. One example, featured on this issue’s cover, is Dynalectric’s

work installing electrical systems on Phase 1 of the Port of Long Beach Middle Harbor Redevelopment project. The Middle Harbor project includes what is reportedly the

first use of Automated Guided Vehicles at a U.S. container port, featuring unmanned, software-controlled container transport- ers to transport payloads. Dynalectric’s approximately $45 mil- lion contract on the Phase 1 project included providing all labor, equipment, materials, installation and testing of the new electri- cal system; 15 power operators for switch or derail; and TIMS equipment for the Pier E container yard and intermodal rail yard. The overall $1.31 billion Middle Harbor project will upgrade

wharfs, water access and storage areas and add a vastly expanded on-dock rail yard at the Port of Long Beach, with work carried out on piers E, D, and F. The overall project, begun in 2011 and to be built in two phases, is expected to take nine years to com-

plete. It is designed to dramatically cut air pollution while adding an estimated 14,000 jobs to the Southern California economy. A number of AGC member contractors are involved in the Port of Long Beach project, including Herzog/Reyes

Joint

Venture, Manson Construction, and Connolly Pacific, among others. In August 2014, 10 building contractors including Dynalec-

tric received the Port of Long Beach’s first “Community Partner Awards” for their work on the terminal project.
