State Senate, replacing Senator Kevin de León on March 21, 2018. Senator Atkins is also the first state legislator in 150 years to serve as both Speaker and Pro Tem. Atkins has said that she intends to build on the successes realized under de León’s leadership. She also pledged to focus on the needs of the senators and address challenges such as the upcoming 2018 elections, legislation, sexual harassment and workplace safety. Atkins was elected to the Senate

in November 2016 after serving for six years in the Assembly, where she was speaker from May 2014 until March 2016. Before serving in the Assembly (2010-2016), she served on the San

Diego City Council from 2000-2008. Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Nigel)

was elected as Senate Minority leader last April, replacing Senator Jean Fuller. She will be the second woman to serve as the Senate’s Republican leader; Fuller was the first. She was a

part of Laguna Niguel’s campaign for cityhood and eventually became its first mayor upon the city’s incorporation in 1989. She served the newfound city on the its Council until 1998. Bates then served in the State Assembly from 1998 to 2004. She served as an Orange County Supervisor from 2007-2014 and returned to the Legislature when she was elected to the Senate in 2014. A California native, Bates’ profes-

sional work before politics was as a Los Angeles County social worker.

The Assembly Anthony Rendon

(D-Lakewood) was elected the 70th Speaker of State Assembly and assumed his duties in March 2016. He’s a third-generation Mexican-American, the grandchild of immigrants who arrived in the United States starting in the 1920s. He grew up in Southern California and attended local colleges and universities.

Rendon, who was elected in 2012

and could serve until in the Assembly until 2024, is the first speaker from the class of legislators that can serve up to 12 years in either chamber. In his first term, Rendon authored Proposition 1, the $7.5 billion state water bond, which voters approved in the November 2014

election. Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) was

elected Assembly Republican Leader late last August, replacing Assembly Member Chad Mayes in the closing weeks of the 2017 session. Dahle ascended to leader as a result of several efforts to oust Assembly- member Mayes because of his work with the Governor and Democratic Legislative leaders in extending the Cap and Trade program. Dahle was first elected in 2012 to

the Assembly after having served as a Lassen County Supervisor for twelve years. Dahle is a third-generation farmer and business owner. 
