optimistic work picture in the construction industry. Still, the projections on retiring baby boomers and future workforce needs are at the forefront of the workforce development concerns that AGC and the industry are addressing. On November 28, 2017, the AGC
A
of California’s Southern California Union Contractors Council and the Southern California Carpenters co-hosted an Open House of the Carpenter’s Buena Park Training Center and Apprenticeship Program. Attendees included: ARB Struc- tures, Bali Construction, Flatiron West, Granite Construction, Griffith Company, ISEC, K.A.R Construction, Kiewit Infrastructure West, McCarthy Builders, OC 405 Partners, and Walsh Construction. “Tis open house was a great
opportunity for our AGC members to see firsthand the development and training of the next generation of carpenters provided in this state-of- the-art facility,” said Mark Turman, President of ARB Structures. Along the same lines, AGC of
California officers and other AGC members throughout the nation had an opportunity to visit the Carpenters International Training Center in Las Vegas in March last year. After the tour of the Inter- national Training Center, Mike Mencarini with Unger Construction stated, “With retiring boomers and with the 2008 recession, it has been

an uphill battle to bring people into our trade, and a first-rate facility like this makes a real difference.” Te Carpenters are not alone.
Each of the AGC Master Labor Agreements in Northern and Southern California have training and apprenticeship programs and designated contributions to those programs that target workforce development every day throughout the state. Tese programs are joint labor
and management efforts. Each program has trustees from both labor and management with vast industry knowledge who work with the program’s directors, coordinators, trainers, educators, and other staff to produce the safest and the most skilled workers in the construction industry. Recently, the Southern California
Laborers Training & Apprenticeship Program celebrated their largest graduating apprenticeship class – 612 individuals, up from 506 in 2016 – at a graduation ceremony at the program’s Azusa Campus. State of California Attorney
General Xavier Becerra and Eric Rood, acting director of the California Department of Industrial Relations’ Division of Apprenticeship Standards, were both in attendance at
the apprentice graduation ceremony. “It was a privilege to join in the celebration of this year’s graduating LiUNA class. It was an honor to shake the hands of the hardworking men and women who successfully completed their apprenticeship journey,” said Rood. Te roles that we all play as
an industry in taking action and addressing our workforce devel- opment needs are increasing. As we continue to head into positive growth with the amount of construction work available, we must also continue to acknowledge and address the need of more skilled workers and remember that we need to do our part to ensure that our industry continues to thrive. We would like to say thank you
to the management trustees for volunteering their time and efforts as trustees on these programs and for ensuring the next generation of safe and skilled workers in California. We appreciate your hard work and dedication to the industry. For more information about AGC
