Sustainable Trails Workshops

will host hands-on programs The 2015 Symposium will feature a new partnership with

the Professional Trailbuilders Association (PTBA) for the Sustainable Trails Workshop Series and Legacy Trail. PTBA is coordinating a series of hands-on workshops for the critical skills and techniques involved in the sustainable design, planning, construction, and maintenance of trails for all types of users in all types of environments. A related project will be the construc- tion of a segment of sustainably and professionally-built trail at Tryon State

Park. Besides showcasing trail building techniques for attend- ees, the trail will remain as a legacy of the Symposium and the PTBA partnership.

Chainsaw Safety and Certification Date: Friday - Sunday, May 15-17 This three-day course will provide an excellent overview of all aspects of chainsaw work for trails. Successful candidates 

Great Trails: OHV Solutions for Success Date: Friday - Sunday, May 15-17 Instructor:s Dick and Joani Dufourd, RecConnect teach the details of what makes a great trail great.

Mini-Excavator - Intermediate Skill Builder Date: Friday - Saturday, May 15-16

This two-day workshop will focus on giving participants a good head start and introduction into the world of mecha- nized trail building with mini-excavators.

Trail Bridge Construction Date: Friday - Saturday, May 15-16

Learn the basics of dimensional lumber bridge construction in a two-day, hands-on workshop while designing and building a bridge and its abutments as a part of the PTBA Legacy Trail.

Trail Dozer - Intermediate Skill Builder Date: Friday - Saturday, May 15-16 Instructor: Tony Boone, Tony Boone Trails

This two-day skill building workshop is focused on bringing intermediate trail dozer operators to a higher level, .

Turns for the Better Date: Friday - Saturday, May 15-16 Instructor: Gabe Travis and Christine Byl, Interior Trails, Inc. Learn design and layout for perfect direction-reversing Sweep Turn or Switchback on various side slopes. Use ordinary tools to create a precise layout while minimizing construction time.

Working with Stone Date: Friday - Saturday, May 15-16 Instructor: Erin Amadon, Peter S. Jensen and Associates  by hand and via cable rigging, and installing stone cribbing in a two-day, hands-on workshop.

Pumptrack - Design & Build to the BMX Standards Date: Saturday - Sunday, May 16-17 Instructor: Jérôme Pelland, Sentiers Boréals This two-day design and build workshop includes design consideration for pumptracks built to the highest BMX stan- dards, and then build a track with machines and implements.

Trail Contracting – What Works, What Doesn’t Date: Saturday - Sunday, May 16-17 Instructor: Mike Shields, Michael D. Shields Consulting This two-day overview covers contract types, preparation, - 

Mountain Bike Trail Design & Layout Date: Wednesday-Thursday, May 20-21 Instructor: Scott Linnenburger, Kay-Linn Enterprises  for successful real-world mountain bike-focused trail design and layout at Gateway Green, a new mountain bike park.

Sustainable Trails for All Date: Wednesday-Thursday, May 20-21 Instructor: Peter Jensen and Janet Zeller  the Federal Trail Accessibility Guidelines plus assessment, planning, and constructing trails to meet the new guidelines.

Trail Construction Costs “Reality” Date: Wednesday-Thursday, May 20-21 Instructors Margie Tatro & Mark Reineke will deliver a sim- ple, cost estimating tool for key factors of trail construction costs. Participants will visit a number of sites.

Introduction to Trail Dozer Operation Instructor: Tony Boone, Tony Boone Trails Date: Thursday-Friday, May 21-22 This two-day primer on Trail Dozer operation is focused on introducing the basics of machine understanding, mainte- nance issues, and basic operation technique on gentle terrain.
