Tank You for Investing in Young Professionals By Zoie Francisco, Government Relations Intern
It has been said experience is oſten the best teacher. Tis may be especially true when learning the ropes of how a state legislature operates. Zoie Francisco, a student at Truman State University in Kirksville, joined MBA’s governmental relations team as an intern for the 2023 session of the Missouri General Assembly. Zoie shares her perspective on her internship experience. It’s been a pleasure to work with Zoie!
Tis experience has been a journey of growth, confidence and professionalism, and I will always be thankful to MBA and our member banks for supporting the dreams and aspirations of a young professional like me.
I first decided to join the MBA as the policy and lobbying intern for the 2023 state legislative session because I wanted to learn more about grassroots lobbying and financial policies to be better equipped to serve the communities around me. I felt David Kent and Emily Lewis believed in me, and I will never forget that.
Aſter four months of hands-on experience, I could not be happier. Assisting with the Target Banker program has been one of the most challenging, yet fulfilling, projects I have worked on. If you came for a Target Banker visit early in the session, you would have met a shy, slightly nervous version of myself. As the session ends, I have now grown into a more confident young professional who could take you around the Capitol, introduce you to legislators and explain legislative priorities for the banking industry. Te most fulfilling part of it all was that I was able to engage with bankers from various backgrounds in different parts of the state. Te more conversations I had with each of you — learning how you got into banking, what your day-to-day lives looked like and
the connections you have formed through MBA — the clearer it became that I wanted to work around people like you who strive to serve their communities. Getting to know each of you has made me a more insightful and thoughtful individual.
I want to thank MBA for investing in someone like me. Tis experience has been life-changing, and the skills that I have gained from this internship will travel with me as I continue to pursue a career in banking. I encourage our member banks to invest in other ambitious young professionals. It is a benefit to you and us. Take it from me — investing in young people will train, educate and inspire the future bankers of Missouri.
