MEET THE 2022 NPM JUBILATE DEO & PASTORAL MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD RECIPIENTS
Sister Joyce Ann Zimmerman, Jubilate Deo Award Sister Joyce Ann Zimmerman has belonged to a Congregation of women religious founded for Eucharistic Adoration for more than 50 years. She is the founding director of the Institute for Liturgical Ministry in Dayton and has published numerous scholarly and pastoral liturgical books and articles. For almost a half-century she has focused her ministry on liturgical education, giving numerous workshops, seminars, and Lenten missions, and teaching courses on liturgy and related topics.
Ever grateful for God’s blessings, Sr. Joyce feels particularly honored to receive NPM’s 2022 Jubilate Deo Award as a non-musician. Sr. Joyce explains, “In a real and concrete way this tells me (and others) that NPM musicians are not simply concerned about music- making at liturgies and communal prayer, but clearly recognize that they need to understand the underlying theology, mystery, and depth of our liturgy and prayer.” Addressing the integral connection of music and liturgy, she continues, “Liturgical music without attention to the core Mystery is more or less performance; the celebration of the Mystery of Christ without music is not as liturgically fruitful as it might be.”
When asked how we as disciples can make a difference in the care and renewal of the earth, Sr. Joyce responded, “All things were created good, and when good does not abound, we must examine our use and sharing of the natural resources that are at hand.” She continued,
“Disciples are ‘learners.’ We can learn that renewing our earthly home will take courage, the acceptance of change, and serious insight into how we interact with each other and our natural resources. Most of all, perhaps, we can learn that care for the earth must be a communal effort that begins with each one of us individually making a commitment to care and then living that commitment.”
Peter Kolar, Pastoral Musician of the Year Award Peter Kolar has spent the entirety of his professional career working in Catholic music publishing: 22 years with WLP and four years now with GIA Publications. His primary charge has been the development of Spanish-language and bilingual music resources designed to uplift the sung prayer of this vital segment of the Catholic Church in America. Beyond the editor’s desk, one of Peter’s greatest joys in ministry is engaging with colleagues and fellow music ministers in the context of teaching, sharing, and learning. Doing the work of liturgy provides him a great sense of spiritual nourishment. Peter leads the Diocesan Choir in his home diocese of El Paso, Texas and finds music-
