SEPTEMBER 2022
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
your heart doing today?” As I ask myself that question, my answer is, “My heart is full.” Why is it full? Because of you, my fellow pastoral musicians.

Our 45th National Convention in Louisville and online drew together over 800 musicians, liturgists, clergy, and friends who gathered for learning, fellowship, and song. Te time spent together—whether in person or online—is how I refill my heart and soul. Since I’m an extrovert by nature, that’s probably no surprise! Te in-person attendance exceeded our 2021 in-person participation by nearly 100 registrants, and our virtual platform continues to be refined to provide the best resource to both virtual and in-person attendees.
Personally, I love this combination of in-person and virtual, as it allows me to experience so much more content than if I only had the in-person option—we’ve come a long way from the audio tape recordings!
During our Members’ Meeting on Wednesday, June 29, I offered an update and presented some of the challenges we face. Certainly, growing our membership is the highest priority, and I encourage you to explore our trial membership and share the opportunity with anyone you think may be interested—music directors, clergy, ensemble members, guitarists, organists, pianists, accompanists, cantors, and anyone who loves liturgical music and wants to share in our mission to make music in our liturgies better.
t the 2022 National Convention, plenum speaker Brenda Noriega asked us to consider the question, “¿Cómo está tu corazón? How is
I also talked about the work of our Forums during the Members’ Meeting. Te nine Forums—Affiliation & Advocacy, Certification, Communications, Cultural Diversity, Directors of Music Ministry, Finance & Development, Membership, Musical Skills, and Programming—are actively engaged in the work of NPM, and they need your help. Please consider how you can share your gifts and talents with the Association. We all have something to contribute. Our National Council and the NPM National Office staff represent the diversity of our Church better than ever before, and our work is not done; we will continue to ensure that all voices are represented throughout all levels of leadership.
Over the past 18 months, my main purpose has been to work with the volunteer leadership to realize the vision of a member-led organization and to build a National Office team which better meets the needs of our membership. When I mentioned during the Members’ Meeting that one item from NPM’s archives which I treasure is Fr. Virgil Funk’s original checkbook, I was serious. I often flip through the checkbook and the ledger because doing so connects me to the early days of NPM and the continued need to fulfill our mission.
Won’t you join us as we continue to build upon that great legacy and plan for the next 46 years?
