Culvert Updates

she still packed a punch as she pummeled through our area. King Creek bisects Bonclarken, running south to north between our lake/pool area and the youth cottages. This creek drains a large section - riods. But the amount of water coming down King Creek as a result of rains from Tropical Storm Zeta was phenomenal. At 9:15, I stood on top of the culvert that carries King Creek under

pressure in the southern Carib- bean Sea. This low pressure area quickly grew to a tropical de- pression and then into Hurricane Zeta, making landfall in Louisi- ana as a Category 2 hurricane on October 28. Zeta then turned northeast and raced toward west- ern North Carolina.

At 8:30 on the morning of Octo- ber 29, I stood on the front porch of our Hotel and witnessed some of the strongest winds and rain I have ever seen. Although Zeta had been downgraded to a tropical storm,

n October 15, the Na- tional Hurricane Center noticed an area of low

Kinross Road. Much more water was coming down the creek than the culvert could handle. Providentially, I left the site and investigated other areas around our lake only to get a call 20 minutes later to say the culvert had failed.

Once the culvert failed, water reached this line…so to say this was  From the photos you can see we will have a major repair. We are blessed to have contractors and engineers on our Board who immedi- ately started working on replacement plans. A myriad of government agencies will be involved as we present a plan for replacement. I pray we can have Kinross reopened by June 1. As strong as Zeta’s winds were, having no major damage to any of our buildings was a blessing. We were able to quickly remove the debris from around the grounds and even hosted two guest groups that weekend. Please pray for our Board and staff as plans are made for the cul-

vert replacement. The challenges presented by the year 2020 continue to amaze us.
