2019 KVMA AWARD RECIPIENTS (CONT.)

Te KVMA 2019 Veterinarians of the Year are the team of Drs. Kevin Hyde, Colton Tacker, Brett Woodie and Juliane Suarez. Here is their dramatic story.

In December, 2018, the Lexington Mounted Police were on their way to a Christmas parade. Officer Shawn Davis’ mount Yoder stepped in an open utility access hole with his hind leg and was trapped up to his hock. Due to his extensive training, Yoder remained remarkably calm. Te officers called Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, but their estimated response time was a concern. He then called Dr. Juliane Suarez who lived nearby. She was on the scene and sedating Yoder in about 10 minutes. About 5 minutes later, Dr. Kevin Hyde and Dr. Colton Tacker from Rood and Riddle arrived on the scene.

Fellow mounted officer Scott Lynch, luckily in the unit that night, is trained in large animal rescue. He knew which fire truck to dispatch to assist. Yoder was supported with a sling while the street was jackham- mered to free the pipe. All the mounted officers stayed on the scene with their horses to provide emotional support for Yoder. Te three veterinarians worked to keep Yoder sedated and prevent injury to his

eyes and limbs, and constantly assessed his condition due to the pressure put on his abdomen and legs by the sling and supports.

Finally, the pipe, trapped on Yoder’s leg by his horse shoe, was jackhammered from the pavement. Te shoe was removed and the pipe slid off. Still sedated and down, Yoder was swiftly transported to Rood and Riddle accompanied in the trailer by the three veterinarians and officer Lynch. Once there, Dr. Brett Woodie took over to assess the injuries. Amazingly enough, Yoder only suffered minor injuries and within a month had recovered enough to return to duty.

While these doctors were “just doing their job”, their swift action, professional insight, calming demeanors, and veterinary skills, mitigated Yoder’s injuries and thus prevented a disaster. Te entire city of Lexington would have been heart broken if Yoder had not survived.

Te Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association is pleased to award Veterinarian of the Year awards to Dr. Kev- in Hyde, Dr. Colton Tacker, Dr. Juliane Suarez, and Dr. Brett Woodie. Tey have served our community and represented our profession with great skill and dignity. Join us in honoring these fine veterinarians. 

Distinguished Service Award - Dr. Aaron Goodpastor. Our 2019 recipient of the KVMA Dis- tinguished Service Award represents us all through kindness and quiet compassion.
