PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello KVMA members,

I am excited to begin my term as President of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Associa- tion. I thank the Board of Directors and the membership for giving me this opportunity to lead the KVMA into 2020. I hail from Western Pennsylvania but have resided in Kentucky for 18 years. Over the past several years, the KVMA community has provided me the support and education to grow and progress in the field of leadership and I am extremely grateful.

Te members of KVMA Board of Directors, past and present, and so many active mem- bers continue to work hard to fulfill the KVMA’s mission to promote, improve and serve as an advocate for the veterinary profession. At the recent Board of Director’s retreat,

this mission was the focus of our discussion and development of a strategic plan and action items to ensure a viable future for the organization.

In order to promote KVMA we look to reinforce and refine our outreach efforts to expand membership and to continue to serve our current members. Tis fall we welcomed our 4th group of young veterinari- ans to the Power of Ten leadership program. Additional efforts the KVMA board hopes to accomplish are more interaction with constituent groups and education on key regulatory issues.

In addition to outreach within our organization we will continue efforts to serve the community. Recently KVMA has organized and will be reaching out to veterinary clinics state-wide with the goal to provide pet oxygen mask kits to fire departments and EMT vehicles in Kentucky. We will continue to support animal agriculture related organizations in the state and to support veterinary students from Kentucky at Auburn and Tuskegee.

Continuing education is the cornerstone of improvement for the profession. Next year the annual Mid-America Veterinary Conference will be held on September 18-20, 2020, at the Belterra Resort in Florence, Indiana (just over the Ohio River). Tere are mixed feeling regarding moving the location out of Louisville, but don’t worry, the planning committee led by Dr. Deb Shoulders is organizing a top notch educational program (and maybe goat yoga!). For those with concerns about the casino, the conference center is located in its own wing away from the casino.

KVMA’s advocacy work benefits members, but it benefits the entire profession as well. With the help of our governmental relations committee and lobbyist, KVMA continues to monitor state legislation that pertains to veterinary medicine and animal health issues. Items on the forefront include reporting of an- imal abuse, compounding regulations and continued support for contract seats for veterinary students at Auburn and Tuskegee. Advocacy is not limited to state level, through our AVMA delegate, Dr. Jim Weber and alternate-delegate, Dr. Frank Vice, KVMA is linked to federal legislative and regulatory bodies.

As you can see there are lots of exciting things happening with KVMA. Tis is your organization and we are always interested in feedback or suggestions. Please do not hesi- tate to contact us.
