asey Hurd has been in the landscape industry for as long as he was “old enough to work.” When he turned

14, his first job with a landscape company sparked a pas- sion that only grew from there. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Hurd earned a degree in

turf and landscape management. But it was during an internship working for an agricultural company (and selling fertilizer) that he learned he was much happier being hands-on and immersed in the field. After college, he returned to the Eastern Shore of

Maryland and started working for a large-scale landscape company that performed primarily commercial work. Again, this helped him refine his focus even further. “It was a very positive experience and I learned a lot,”

Hurd says. “But I realized that I definitely prefer working on a smaller scale—something that is a bit less fast-paced and where you can get to know the customers better.” Even so, as the founder of Greenscapes Land Care, 30-

year old Hurd is facing rapid growth himself and admits that one of his biggest concerns right now is keeping that growth in line with where he wants to be. The company has already vastly evolved from where it began and is doing great things for the community. Green- scapes Land Care donates mowing services to a local fire house and has adopted the land care of a traffic circle in town. Under Hurd’s direction, the company also offers a landscape-based “English as a Second Language” 10-week class to help current employees and recruit future ones. An active member of the community, Hurd also sits on the Kent County Chamber of Commerce Board, Kent County Ag Center Board, and is a speaker at Ches- apeake College for students entering the agricultural field. We recently caught up with Hurd, the NALP Young Entre-

preneur of the Year, an award he won at NALP’s National Collegiate Landscape Competition, to find out more.

WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS MOTTO? My business motto is what I was actually going to use as my company slogan: “We like to provide a difference.” I mean that in terms of not only the services that we offer and how we treat our customers but also in terms of what our internal culture is like. We want this to be a different atmosphere—not your typical place to work. We want to provide a difference and, with that, we want to provide the best.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT IN BUSINESS? When I moved the company from my home base to our own commercial space. I live on a farm and have a decent size yard but moving to a commercial property really made it feel like I’d made it. I told employees we are an “official business now,” even though we obviously already were. But having a true commercial property to work out of and grow out of has been exciting.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS CHALLENGE? Like so many others in the indus- try, I would say finding the right employees. Trying to create and develop a workforce that will move forward with me has been a challenge when the turnover rate has been higher than I’d like. I think it comes down to the fact that it takes time to find the right employees. We grew so rapidly, and I knew that would create challenges, such as quickly hav-

ing to increase the number of employees. Now we’re at a point where we’re trying to slow down and manage what we have and with that comes finding the right people who are the right fit for us.
