EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

Early Career Professional Spotlight: Hays Slaughter

Brigitte Petras, ECP-0851

Welcome to the first Early Career Professional (ECP) Spotlight. This is a quarterly series in TPG which highlights bright, early career professionals who are the future of geology as well as this technical community. I hope this spotlight series provides a platform to recognize outstanding early career professionals, inspires students and other young professionals to find their own path to success by learning from others, and that other professions gain more insight on the talent and the ideas of early career professionals.

Hays Slaughter was selected to be in the ECP Spotlight. I first

became familiar with Hays after I read one of his articles in TPG in 2022. Upon others’ recommendations, I had invited him to be a panelist in the Career Advancement Webinar, which was part of the 2024 Student ECP Webinar Series, so he can provide insights on his mining career which has taken him across the United States. I interviewed Hays and asked him some relevant questions. Below are some notes I had taken on his responses.

Tell us about yourself. Hays Slaughter is a geologist who obtained his Geology degree

from Columbus State University (CSU) in Georgia. During his time as a student, Hays was active in AIPG as a student officer. This led to published articles in AIPG's The Professional Geologist. Hays has received invaluable guidance and support through AIPG's mentoring program. This mentorship helped him to gain his first employment opportunity. Currently, Hays is a geologist working for AngloGold Ashanti in Beatty, Nevada on a gold epithermal project. Previously, Hays worked on another gold exploration project in Alaska.

Tell us more about your current role. His current role is a mixture of logging core, rig checks (making

sure that drilling is occurring in the ore and not waste rock for example) and reverse circulation (RC drilling (in which preliminary chip samples are collected and analyzed). Additionally, Hays performs high wall mapping and channel sampling (mapping and sampling zones of interest) to provide insight into the grades and future production of the mine at North Bullfrog. He is supervising and training other geologists on the deposits of interest. He also works with hydrogeologists by providing logs to assist with their work on constructing hydrogeologic models.

More recently, AngloGold Ashanti has sponsored Hays to take multiple courses for geomodelling in the leading 3D geologic modeling software for mining ore bodies, Leapfrog Geo, through SEEQUENT training. Additionally, he was sponsored to take a course in exploration geochemistry. These courses are in preparation for future geomodelling work.

How did your education and student opportunities help you in your career? One of the main student opportunities that helped Hays develop

his professional career is through AIPG. He first became involved with the AIPG student chapter in Georgia and was elected to serve as an officer early on in his undergraduate career. Staying active in AIPG also helped him connect with a mentor though the AIPG Mentorship Program.

What's one of your favorite AIPG experiences? (You can talk about multiple experiences if you’d like) One of Hays favorite memories with AIPG were the monthly

meetings within his student chapter as an undergraduate student. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with other students and learning about their experiences. When Hays was a sophomore,
