PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Shawn Gay, DC

President, WSCA Board of Directors

It’s October already, and as we prepare for another great annual conference, the business of the WSCA is plodding along. While the board will have set its legislative agenda by the time you read this, we’re still working closely with Executive Director and Lobbyist, Lori Grassi, examining the

issues at hand and convening with major stakeholders. These months outside of session are crucial in setting up our agenda for when lawmakers return to Olympia. Now is the time—now that they’re back in their home districts—to meet with them one-on-one or in small groups to discuss the issues that are important to you and to our profession.

This edition of Plexus will focus on legislative and insurance issues; and it will provide plenty of material for you to draw upon in those meetings. Lori has written several articles on these topics that should give you the big picture of where we’re going in 2018. Our Legislative Director, Dr. David Butters, has also prepared an article on what you as an individual chiropractor can do to support the WSCA’s legislative endeavors. And finally, because the WSCA is more than just its DC members, staff have worked with one of our founding corporate partners, Adler Giersch, to highlight the ways we can work in tandem to build and strengthen the chiropractic profession (and our corporate partners’ businesses) by supporting good public policy.

As you read through these articles and get a sense of what’s in store for the next year, let me also remind you of another important piece of association business that is on the horizon—board elections.

There are four board positions to be filled this year: President-Elect, and the representatives of Districts 1, 2, and 6. District 1 comprises Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, and northeast King Counties. District 2 comprises the coastal portions of those counties, as well as San Juan and Island Counties. District 6 comprises the City of Tacoma and most of the Olympic Peninsula.

In order to be eligible for the president-elect position, you must have been a member of the association for at least five consecutive years and collect at least 25 endorsements from current WSCA members. To be eligible for a district representative position, you must live or work within the Congressional District you wish to represent, have been a WSCA member for two consecutive years, and collect at least 10 endorsements from current members within your district. Endorsement forms can be obtained by contacting the association office at 206.878.6055, or by emailing wsca@chirohealth.org.

The deadline to submit your endorsements is 5:00pm on Wednesday, November 1, 2017.

WSCA Seeking Applicants for IICAC and CQAC

The WSCA is seeking applications from licensed and practicing chiropractors for appointments to the Industrial Insurance Chiropractic Advisory Committee (IICAC) and the Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission (CQAC).

The Industrial Insurance Chiropractic Advisory Committee is an advisory board to the Department of Labor and Industries and works as a liaison between the chiropractic profession and the Department. The Committee members are appointed by the Department. This Committee has been instrumental in improving our profession’s relationship with the Department. They meet every third Thursday of the month in Olympia with summers off. The term is for three years.

The Chiropractic Quality Assurance

Commission is a division of the Department of Health. The Commission members are appointed by the Governor. Their primary function is to protect the public from incompetent, unethical, and impaired practitioners. They also develop rules that affect us in our daily practices. The Commission is comprised of eleven chiropractors and three public members. They meet approximately eight times per year with additional dates scheduled for disciplinary hearings. Applicants must be a resident of Washington State and must have been in practice for five years. The term is for four years.

If you have a desire to seek an appointment on either the Industrial Insurance Chiropractic Advisory Committee or the Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission, please contact the WSCA, at 206.878.6055 or Les White, DC, the Selections Committee Coordinator, at 206.246.5370.
