EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Jeff Curwen, CAE WSCA Executive Director

Over the past month or two, you’ve heard repeated messages from the WSCA Board and staff regarding the current state of the Washington State Chiropractic Trust and how it

is in desperate need of funding. That’s still the case, but I’d like to take a moment to explain why it is so important for you to help keep the Trust’s coffers full.

The Trust is the political action committee (PAC) for chiropractic in Washington. Despite their similar names, the Trust and the WSCA are two separate entities. By law, the Association cannot give its funds to a PAC.

must come from individuals or businesses directly.

So the support for the Trust Supporting

your profession’s PAC is crucial for several reasons. First and foremost, PACs serve as vital tools for amplifying the voices of individuals and organizations within the political landscape. By contributing to a PAC, you help ensure that specific interests and issues receive the attention they deserve, whether that’s healthcare, insurance, or other concerns.

Additionally, PACs play a significant role in funding candidates who align with your values and priorities. In a political environment where campaign costs are skyrocketing, having financial backing is essential for candidates to compete effectively. Your support helps level the playing field, enabling those who advocate for policies friendly to our cause to gain traction against well-funded opponents.

Supporting your PAC also empowers you to have a more direct influence on legislation. Many PACs engage in lobbying efforts, advocating for policies that align with their mission. By backing these initiatives, you contribute to shaping the legislative agenda and pushing for changes that can have lasting impacts.

Finally, your involvement sends a message about the importance of civic engagement. When individuals support their PACs, they demonstrate a commitment to active participation in democracy, encouraging others to get involved as well. This collective action is essential for creating a robust democratic process where diverse voices are heard and represented. And it’s no secret how little political diversity exists in Washington state government… hence, why funding the Trust is essential to our political ends.

Keep in mind that every time the WSCA advocates for one piece of legislation or another, there are powerful and well-funded opponents working against us. Other, larger professions often give us push-back, and insurance companies are constantly fighting against all of our work. In order for us to be effective at serving your professional best interests, the WSCA needs the resources to leverage policymakers in our favor. We do that with funding from the Trust.

But as we’ve been saying again and again, the Trust is running dangerously low.

Yet, the key to keeping the Trust solvent is so incredibly simple, you’ll probably laugh when I say it. Imagine this scenario… if every chiropractor in Washington set up a monthly donation to the Trust of just $10, the Trust would have enough funds to operate for a good four of five years. $10 a month. That’s one or two cups of coffee. That’s about half of the lowest reimbursement you might get from one adjustment. That’s less than your monthly Netflix subscription!

For one reason or another, there will always be those docs who are willing to let others foot the bill for them, so I don’t expect every DC to set up a recurring donation. But even if only half of them did—again, at only $10/month—that would solve the problem entirely.

It’s about the future of your profession. If you

want legislative changes in your favor in Washington, I urge you to set up a recurring Trust donation today. If you can give more than $10, that’d be awesome. But $10/month would do it.
