Fluoride Supplements for Children
QUESTION: Are there current restrictions or updated guidance on pre- scribing oral fluoride supplements for children? A member dentist recently inquired about the status of oral fluoride supplementation for pediatric patients, noting recent media attention and questions about potential restric- tions, prescribing limitations, and best practices.
ANSWER: The ADA states that while the U.S. Food and Drug Administra- tion signaled in May 2025 an intent to ban fluoride supplements alto- gether, significant public and profes- sional feedback—including detailed comments from the ADA—led the agency to reverse course.
On October 31, 2025, the FDA issued guidance advising manufacturers not to market fluoride supplements for children under age 3. Importantly, this statement does not restrict dentists’ ability to prescribe fluoride supplements and has no direct regu- latory impact on clinical decision- making.
The ADA continues to emphasize that fluoride supplementation should be determined on an individual basis, guided by the dentist or physician in consultation with parents. Key considerations include the child’s ac- cess to fluoridated water and overall caries risk.
