race of organized dentistry even if it’s a “new normal.” Track season is upon us. Is this the year you explore more volunteer leadership involvement at some level? There are open positions and good support resources avail- able when you are ready to take the plunge. Lace up your shoes!

Returning to our original story, dentistry is becoming more and more like a world championship with several cultures coming together. New practice models and con- stantly changing regulations are just two influences to consider. More women are graduating from dental school than men for the first time. Ethnic diversity is growing as a reflection of our greater society. But we are still all running in the same direction for the same prize. It’s incumbent upon the current runners to be inclusive, to show respect, and to learn about and from each other. Likewise, it’s incumbent upon the awaiting runners to value the ground covered to this point and to commit to the greater good. How well are we poised to embrace this race and train for smooth transitions from one generation to the next? It seems simple but the execution is tough. You can do it. You must do it. Glory is within reach! f

ooking for a positive way to serve and give back? The MDA Foundation has openings for new board members.

Duties include reviewing and awarding dental student scholarships as well as grant funds to local organizations doing oral health outreach. Plus, the MDAF oversees access to care activities like MOMOM. Meetings are twice a year in the spring and fall. Board member terms are for three years. Applicants are first reviewed by the MDAF and then fully approved by the MDA Board. For more information or an application, please contact Paul.

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION COVERAGE

IS REQUIRED BY LAW? If you employ five or more employees, you are required by law to provided workers compensation coverage. Failing to do so could result in penalty fees and/or jail time. However, if you have fewer than five employees, while you are not required by law to provide this coverage, you still will be liable for those employees’ medical bills stemming from a work- related injury—as health insurance will not pay for medical bills which arise from a work-related injury.
