Community Association Manager (CAM) Mentoring Program to help managers navigate the certifications, designations, and licensing requirements.

Can CAI provide all of my manager education for the initial state

licensing and CMCA designation? CAI can provide all of the manager education needed for both purposes. The CMCA test, which also qualifies as the state of Illinois licensing test, is administered by CAMICB, but CAI can help with the process.

How long does it take to become

licensed? It depends on how quickly you can register for and complete the required education, and how quickly you can pass the CMCA/state license test. The typical time frame is about 1-3 months.

Once I have my license, what do I

need to do to keep it? You need to renew the license every two years in the odd year. The next upcoming renewal date is August 1, 2015. Currently there are no continuing education (CE) requirements established by the state, but it is anticipated there will be ongoing CE requirements in the future. The state will also be publishing a list of approved providers for the manager licensing renewal CE requirements, which will likely include a number of industry organizations.

What do I need to do to keep my

CMCA? To recertify for the CMCA certification, you must continue to practice community association management, complete 16-hours of continuing education every 2-years, complete and submit the recertification application, and pay the required fee. This fee is to the Community Association Managers International Certification Board (CAMICB).

To summarize the State of Illinois Community Association Manager licensing requirements for new managers and the CMCA certification, it can be explained like so:

1. Education: You’ll need to attend approved prerequisite courses. This requires registration and a fee to the organization that provides the education, currently CAI. The same M-100 course can satisfy prerequisites for both the State of Illinois manager license and for CMCA certification.

2. Testing: The CMCA test satisfies the requirement for the state of Illinois new manager license and the CMCA certification. Once prerequisite education is complete, you will need to register and pay for the CMCA test.

3. Licensing: Once education and testing are successfully completed, you must complete a license application and submit it with payment to the State of Illinois.

4. Membership: The CAI Membership allows you to receive a discount on education. This membership has a separate registration fee and renewal process. As you advance in your career, there are other CAI designations such as the Association Management Specialist (AMS) and Professional Community Association Manager (PCAM) which earn you more recognition and respect in the industry. It is important to continue to learn and expand your knowledge base.

Hopefully, this article has helped dispel some of the confusion that may surround manager licensing, CAI designations and CAI membership. While the Illinois manager’s license, the CMCA designation and its related CAI membership are all clearly separate things, there is an interwoven interdependence and connection, particularly for the new manager or the person just trying to enter the field of community association management in the State of Illinois. You may also wish to check with your management company for further information. When in doubt, refer to the CAI website at www.cai-illinois. org and click on “Manager Licensing”. The CAI Illinois Chapter’s website is one convenient resource on all of the requirements for manager licensing, various available CAI designations and CAI membership.
