Katrina
A little wild girl in love with the zing & sparkle of every bitty thing
Especially what we call weeds
funga & flowering bouquets
who never lost the girl or the wild the bigger she got

s this edition of FUNGI was going to press, I received word of the passing of a dear friend, Katrina Blair. Katrina has been an integral part of the Telluride Mushroom Festival family for the last 20 years, and 15 times she hiked to the
Festival, from Durango (including all 8 peaks) with wild plants to serve at the annual Wild Foods dinner. Each year, participants left the dinner with a glow that was not just from eating wild food, but from sharing Katrina's energy and joy. Tose who were around Katrina felt her radiance, and even until her last days, her eyes were shining bright and she had a fairy-like glow. She lived a life of service and education about wild plants and foraging, and she will be missed. -Britt
Dauntless No one gave permission
to the last mushroom of the season to be this plucky,
to shoulder aside the moss and pebbles,
pine needles and duff in its staunch search for sunlight.
The ground is already cooling, and on the fringes of the mountains snow has gathered.
Nothing seems less likely
than the perfect blooming chanterelle singing of sun and fragranced like an apricot.

Sometimes the hardest work is listening, down in the dense darkness of the underworld, for the distant call of who to be.
How to be wild, and open, despite the gathering storm.
But the mushroom knew, and so do you—
What it is to push upwards,
inexorably upwards toward the light.
so big
she fills the whole voluptuous garden beds of my heart
