ith the coldest months of the year now behind us, the American circus is rolling out across the country
with great gusto!
UniverSoul Circus, celebrating its 29th season, departed from its traditional season opener in Atlanta (GA), opting to kick off the new season in Memphis (TN) February 2, then moving to Dallas (TX) February 24, neither city of which UniverSoul played last year. Meanwhile, Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo is in Seattle (WA) March 2–5, Portland (OR) March 9–12 and Los Angeles (CA) March 23–20. Kooza winds up its Houston engagement March 5. Circus Sarasota is presenting Circus Sarasota Legacy: 25th Anniversary thru March 5 in Sarasota (FL). This year’s edition features Ringmaster Joseph Bauer, Jr.; Sylvia Zerbini’s Liberty Horses; and the world-premiere performance of aerial artists Maryna Tkachenko and Anastasiia Kornieieva from Ukraine. Pedro Reis’ Circus Arts Conservatory, as a member of the Global Alliance of Circus Schools (GACS), recently supported displaced Ukrainian circus artists “by sponsoring visas and offering [them] jobs.”
Circus Sarasota will also feature American unicyclist
Wesley Williams who recently broke his own Guinness World Record for Tallest Rideable Unicycle for the second time at 34 feet, 10 inches at the 45th Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo. Williams’s feat earned him the festival’s Prix Special du Conseil National and Prix Special
Europa Park. Circus Vargas presents its all-new Bonjour, Paris edi- tion featuring Ringmaster Jonathan Lee Iverson, formerly of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey fame, and self- billed as “The Last Ringmaster.” Described as an “all-new high-energy, action-packed extravaganza,” CV opened in San Diego January 20 before moving on to National City February 17–27, and will play Escondido March 3–20. Circo Hermanos Vazquez opened its season in Donna (TX) in early February and will appear in McAllen (TX) March 3–19. Garden Bros. Nuclear Circus is pursuing an aggres- sive performance schedule with 49 performances in Texas and Arizona during March: ten in Austin, 26 in Dallas, 10 in Lubbock, and three in Tucson. Carden International Circus presents 22 performances in six Texas towns through March 21: Sulphur Springs, Belton, Bryan, West Giddings, Corpus Christi and Waco. Jordan World Circus opens the month in San Angelo (TX) March 1, then hits three New Mexico dates and four Arizona gigs before playing Reno (NV) March 17–19. Three Shrine Circus engagements this month, presented by the Royal Hanneford Circus, include the Zenobia show in Toledo (OH) March 13–19; the Moolah show in St. Charles (MO) March 23–26; and the Hejaz show in Spartanburg (SC) March 28–30. Venardos Circus returns to Lynchburg (VA) March 1. Mr.
Swindle’s Peculiarium and Drink-Ory appeared in Punta Gorda and Boca Raton last month and will open in Jupiter (FL)

Circus Fund donations are used to help the OABA maintain the right of circuses and USDA licensed performing animal owners to provide Americans with educational exhibits and performances of exotic animals. Funds allow the Association to hire professionals to assist with legislative and regulatory challenges that threaten our members’ businesses. Those who contribute at least $25 will be listed in our Circus Fund Contribution Report in monthly ShowTime magazine as well as in the annual Midway Marquee Directory.
