Volunteer Spotlight

Name: Sarah McKee Title: Executive Director Company: Issaquah Highlands Community Association

Family: Just married my best friend, Mickey McKee on December 29, 2013 (had to get that tax break, or will it be?!) I have a step-daughter, Laura (getting married this May) and a step-son, Quint. We moved to the Pacific NW a few years ago and left the majority of our family in southern states. I have two sisters, a brother and nine nieces and nephews.

Pets: The one and only Louie (affectionately known as Screwy Louie), a rescued American Eskimo.

Residence: Lake Stevens (yes, it is a long drive every day from Lake Stevens to Issaquah). We also have a second home in Goodyear, AZ.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Business from Murray State University and a Master’s of Public Administration from Murray State University . . . home of the RACERS!! As well as my CMCA and AMS.

Hobbies: Golf, and I like to play golf, oh and did I mention golf. On weekends, it is not a matter of if we are going to play, it is a matter of where we are going to play. Still striving for my second hole in one since my last one in August of 2007. I also have a very large Nutcracker collection of over 250 pieces and not just for Christmas.

Best Memory: Playing golf in Scotland, playing golf in New Zealand, Playing golf in Australia, Playing golf in Puerto Rico, Playing golf in Whales . . . Playing Torrey Pines, Oakmont, LaQuinta (PGA West), Spyglass Hill, The Pete Dye Course, and the courses at Bandon Dunes.

Reading List: A good murder/mystery. Anything by John Grisham or Harlan Corben.

Favorite Movie: Forest Gump (I still cry at all the sad parts, even after having seen it 50+ times), Pretty Woman, and most of the Grisham novel adaptations.

Favorite Album/CD: Since I am in my car for 2.5 hours every day for the commute, I listen to a variety of music . . . from Jazz to Rap. My favorite musician is Eric Clapton.

Favorite Place: Just about any golf course, but in particular the courses at Bandon Dunes. My husband proposed on the 13th Hole of Pacific Dunes, so that one holds a very special place in my heart. We also loved the course in New Zealand which does remind me a bit of the courses along the coasts of the Pacific NW.

If I could do it all over again, I would . . . have started playing golf at a much younger age. I played softball until my late 20’s and did not take up golf until then. Always makes me wonder how much better (or worse) my game would be now.

If I had one year off, I would . . . Travel to play golf! My goal is to visit and play golf in all 50 states. I have visited 42 states (drove through a couple more) and played golf in 29, including Alaska.

Vision of the community association industry: Ever increasing and ever changing. Since I manage a large scale community with homes that are approaching 20 years and ones that are still under construction, it is imperative that members of this association lead the way in continuing to serve the residents, whether they are struggling with older homes or trying to understand the meaning of the homeowners association and how that integrates into the community as a whole. It is our responsibility to educate our residents of the importance of community associations and how they improve the housing conditions in every community.

I have been a volunteer of the Chapter . . . for a couple of years. I serve on the Outreach Committee and help coordinate the volunteers which prepare quarterly dinner meals at Ronald McDonald House. I could not ask for a better committee made up of individuals who are not only dedicated to this industry, but are willing to give of their time to help others. However, I do believe that I receive a much greater benefit than the families we serve at Ronald McDonald House.

Why do you volunteer for the Washington State Chapter? The Outreach Committee contributes to the communities we serve in a much different way than we do in our everyday professions. We are able to give back to the community through food preparation, roadside clean-up, donations of food, clothing and toys, and Earth Day activities. In comparison to our total WSCAI membership, the volunteers of this committee have contributed a countless hours of their time to the greater Seattle area. It is truly an honor to serve on this committee.
