What’s hot in landscape color or how to add spring color for little dollars?


Bright and lively plants are always a great way to bring some excitement to the community! Castle mix (Celosia) has very lively colors that are quite inviting when placed around monument signs and community entrances.


Marigolds and alyssum are wonderful when you want bright colors but may have a bunny problem. Te white alyssum will deter the bunnies and protect the marigolds so that you can enjoy their vibrant color for many months. And of course, it wouldn’t be spring without petunias! Petunias are available in a wide array of colors that are sure to please any eye.

With the drought conditions in California everyone is looking for options for monument annual color. One solution is Euphorbia millii ‘Dwarf.” Native to Madagascar, this slow-growing shrub in our latitudes brings a more vivid bloom. Ranging from white, yellow, pink, or red, a multitude of small flowers cover Euphorbia milii. With a maximum height of two feet, equipped and with non-aggressive thorns Euphorbia milii thrives in the driest place in the garden. It requires little watering, in general, and the soil must be drained. Flowering throughout the year, it will be the most colorful in the dry season.

New Perennial primroses called Elites grow well in partial to full-shade and bloom over a long-period from early Spring through early Summer. Exceptionally hardy and carefree. Deep green foliage comes alive with masses of flowers in shades of red, pink, purple, yellow or white. Plant in moist, well drained, average to rich soil for years of enjoyment 8-12 inches tall and 10-12 inches wide.

Annuals are the flower power behind most beautiful landscapes. As spring approaches, here are some improved varieties of some old favorites:


Snow princess (Alyssum) a versatile heat tolerant version of the old stand-by. Tis long season performer grows fast and maintains its white flowers all season long, making it a great border or accent plant.


SunPatiens this variety of Impatiens resembles the New Guinea Impatiens with the same bright vibrant colors. However, being tolerant of sun and heat, with unsurpassed vigor and disease resistance, makes this a great choice for all spring plantings.


Wizard series (Coleus) this part sun to filtered shade plant has an improved compact growth to 12-14 inches high and never need pinching. Te Wizard series adds bright color foliage with many shades and combinations of oranges, reds, pinks, and yellows.
