for this new type of EFDA. While Dr. Barton is working daily on this develop- ment, he also is consulting weekly with a larger group of experienced EFDA dentist trainers, the former state dental director and faculty consultants to work toward finalizing curriculum development so the pilot project may commence, perhaps as soon as January 2024. MDA takes seri- ously its stewardship of the entire EFDA program and of this specific pilot project; as such, the Association is the sole funder for curriculum development and pilot project testing.

In addition to this pilot, there have been discussions with at least one hygiene education program to consider address- ing educational boundaries to offer a non-traditional program with didactic development online and clinicals following in a dental setting. This is more compli- cated due to accreditation processes, but it shows promise. Filling the pipeline for dental team members, both hygienists and assistants, also must be addressed. This should start in high schools, planting the seeds or offering vo-tech programs preparing individuals for immediate access into the workforce. The MDA supports this type of project also being explored by the ODH. Further, the MDA is beginning to consult with a communications firm to promote dental team careers—both dental assisting and dental hygiene, and especially expanded functions.

MDA knows the workforce shortage challenges our dentists are facing across the state. Our continued work will aim to meet our mission to help all members succeed. More importantly, it will help all dentists. And in that vein, I will close by saying this is just one reason all dentists should belong to MDA.
