WINNING ENTRY { OPEN } CITY LIGHTS by Dr. Jack Backs, Hermann


THE “OPEN” CATEGORY HAD NINE ENTRIES. Any photo could be submitted in this category, especially if it didn’t fit another. Dr. Backs (SIU 89) created this early- evening photo in Omaha, Nebraska while attending his daughter’s graduation from Creighton Medical School. “This was an eight-second timed exposure taken on a whim,” he said. “I didn’t have my tripod, so I merely set the camera on


a covered crosswalk ledge. There was light rainfall which is ideal for creating reflections on the roadway.” Dr. Backs has had numerous entries selected as cover winners, including this year’s third issue, “Catfish for Lunch,” the Animals category winner. It was a stunningly-detailed image of a bald eagle bringing its full nest of eaglets a catfish for lunch. Don’t forget we’re taking entries for the 2022 contest now through the end of December!
