ince 2009 and through 2010, the MDA has been providing members with information about its Best Management Practices for the Environment program. With this issue of the Focus, we are proud to announce the launch of the BMP Online CE program! Read on for more specifi cs about the program and its importance to Missouri dentists.
LAYING THE GROUNDWORK
In 2008, the MDA Board created an ad hoc committee on Amalgam Waste (later renamed Best Management Practices for the Environment) to initially consider any suggestions or changes to the MDA’s policy on handling amalgam waste. Committee members understood that in order to keep Missouri dentists proactive on future changes in handling of amalgam waste, the Associa- tion needed to provide resources for education about and implementation of the ADA BMPs for Amalgam Waste, which includes the voluntary installation of amalgam separators.
The fi rst phase of the project was an information-gathering process to determine a state baseline for amalgam waste and environmental practices, especially the use of separators in member dental offi ces. In April 2009, a random online survey was conducted of 506 offi ces, with a response rate of 41 percent. The executive summary of results indicated a small percentage of members using
