AWARDS FOR DENTIST OF THE YEAR, DISTINGUISHED SERVICE and OUTSTANDING NEW DENTAL LEADER

Dr. Cheryl Haley is the 2010 MDA Dentist of the Year.

This award is de- signed to recognize a member dentist who has demon- strated outstand- ing service to the Association, to the profession of dentistry and/or to the commu- nity in the past year.

Dr. Haley has spent the last year doing exactly that, helping organized dentistry in every way. She volunteers her time on multiple commit- tees, ad hocs and boards, and through each has demonstrated her enthusiasm and passion for the dental profession.

Dr. Haley has been active on all levels of orga- nized dentistry by participating in the Greater Springfi eld Dental Society, the MDA and ADA. In Greater Springfi eld, she volunteers as a mem- ber of the Board of Directors, the Foundation Auction Committee, the PAC committee and the Continuing Education Committee. She also serves on the Committee for the new Missouri Mission of Mercy project, is a member of ad hoc for the MDA BMP for the Environment project and just recently became a Board member of the MDA Foundation.

Dr. Haley is active legislatively as a regular participant in the MDA Legislative Days, and in 2010, she attended the ADA Washington Lead- ership Conference at her own personal expense.

When asked what she would like to see ac- complished in the future of organized dentistry Dr. Haley said, “To see members engaged and active in the tripartite. No one dentist is a vil- lage, and it’s important we strive to have our village speaks with a single, unifi ed voice.” She also added, “There are so many powerful tools offered through the MDA, such as the Your Mouth is Talking campaign and legislative days. I hope more dentists become aware of what’s available to them and take advantage of all of it.”

While accepting her award at the House of Del- egates banquet, Dr. Haley encouraged members to reach out to all ages and stages of members, admitting that she was a late bloomer. “I was practicing dentistry, playing golf, had my dogs … and thought my life was pretty complete. It was at this time Kelly Barnett called me and invited me to serve on the Greater Springfi eld Board.” That was all it took, and I was hooked [on organized dentistry]. So while it’s important to get new members involved, it’s also impor- tant to ask us “old-timers” because we may have a lot to offer,” she said.

Dr. Haley’s enthusiasm and passion for the dental profession and organized dentistry is un- matched, and it is for this reason that she is the MDA Dentist of the Year. Dr. Haley has a general practice in Ozark and is a 1983 graduate of the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Ken Weinand is the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Service Award.

dedication to the MDA and the dental profes- sion during his or her career.

Dr. Weinand’s history of service to all three levels of the tripartite (the Greater Kansas City Dental Society, the MDA and ADA) is notewor- thy.

Dr. Weinand has served in many positions for the Greater Kansas City Dental Society, includ- ing as a member and president of the Board of Directors, a member of the PAC Board and as a delegate to the MDA. Additionally, he continues to have a lead role in the never-ending battle to improve oral health by fl uoridating Indepen- dence city water.

At the MDA, Dr. Weinand served as a Trustee on the MDA Board and has served and continues to serve on various ad hoc committees, including his current work with the ad hoc for the MDA BMP for the Environment project as well as the MDA Fluoridation Ad Hoc. At the national level, Dr. Weinand is a long-time delegate to the ADA and has served on the ADA Council on Membership.

Dr. Weinand maintains his work in organized dentistry is not yet complete. “I want to protect the public and promote our profession,” he said. “At each category of our profession, I want us all to work together in all areas of dentistry to solve access to care. I want to work toward that goal with the MDA.”

Dr. Weinand’s devotion to the dental profession and to organized dentistry is evident to all who know him. The Distinguished Service Award follows his 2004 receipt of the MDA Dentist of the Year. Dr. Weinand has a general practice in Independence and is a 1977 graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
