Missouri Dental Board Meeting Report T
he Missouri Dental Board held its open session on Friday, January 16, 2015 in Jefferson City. MDA advocacy includes keeping members updated on Dental Board proceedings and giving input to the Board on regulatory matters for the profession. During this recent Missouri Dental Board meeting, the following actions were taken by the Board:
Voted to move forward with promulgation of rules in the Dental Practice Act regarding Infection Control.
Discussed various parts of the sedation rules, suggesting changes to be made and will again review sedation rule at another Board meeting this year. Some of the review was at the request of the MDA Board of Trustees regarding sedation rules discrepancies.
Approved additional CRDTS and WREB Dental Examiners.
Cancelled the February 6, 2015 meeting to review the Expanded Function delegable duties and Basic Skills Exam. The Dental Board felt the information needed for this meeting from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) would not be available by February 6. The meeting will be rescheduled for a future time once information is gathered.
Prioritized agenda for March 6, 2015 special meeting. A discussion is planned on teleden- tistry, sleep apnea, supervision of dental assistants and mandating defibrillators in dental offices. Note: The MDA has formed a teledentistry ad hoc committee to review the application of teledentistry in others states and the use of some form of its application in Missouri.
Assigned to Dental Board members Deb Polc, RDH and Dr. Kevin Wallace the develop- ment of components the Missouri Dental Board wishes to see in clinical competency exams that must be completed for licensure in Missouri.
Presented several bills of interest that they would be watching in the 2015 legislature: HB109, a medical radiology licensing bill; HB155, calling for cultural competency training for licensees; HB319 and HB320, dealing with telehealth; SB103, calling for members of general assembly to receive professional registration licensing information upon request; and, HB459, relating to dental hygienists extended access permits. f

Appointment to
MO Dental Board Missouri statute requires that the MDA submit a list of five dentists annually to be considered by the governor as possible candidates for vacant dentist position(s) on the Missouri Dental Board. The MDA must submit possible candidates for con- sideration no later than July 1, 2015. The governor is not obliged to appoint one of the MDA candidates to the position. The final appointment is made by the gover- nor, approved by the individual’s senator and confirmed by the entire Senate.
This notice seeks to 1) Make members aware that they may submit their name to be considered for a 5-year appoint- ment to the Missouri Dental Board; and, 2) Inform members who are interested in serving about the duties of a Dental Board member.
J
ust before leaving for its winter break, Congress passed the Tax Increase Prevention Act (H.R. 5771), which extends the Sec. 179 expensing tax provision for 2014. The president signed the measure on December 19.
The ADA worked hard to ensure passage of this law, which allows small businesses to write off up to $500,000 of capital investment in 2014. ADA members sent over 8,500 emails to Congress urging lawmakers to pass the bill. In addition, ADA staff met with key legislators and staff about this issue throughout the year. Without passage of H.R. 5771, dental practices would have been permitted to write off only $25,000 of investments in 2014, and the tax benefit would have phased out for investments above $200,000.
Because H.R. 5771 only applies to the 2014 tax year, the ADA will continue fighting to ensure tax fairness for small businesses by working to make Section 179 permanent in the coming year. To learn more about ADA advocacy efforts visit

In an effort to submit the most qualified candidates to the governor for consid- eration, the MDA Board of Trustees has established a standing committee to review potential Dental Board ap- pointees. The committee will submit a report for the entire Board’s review and discussion at their April meeting so that the Board can reach a consensus prior to the July 1 deadline. Candidates will be provided a questionnaire to be completed and returned to the MDA. Questionnaire responses will be reviewed by the com- mittee members. If the committee has further questions, a telephone interview may be scheduled.
Serving as a Dental Board member requires a large time commitment. Pos- sible commitments are outlined in the attached document “Learn About Serving on the Dental Board” available online at
www.modental.org/dentalboard.
If you wish to submit your name for consid- eration, provide name, current curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation to the MDA office no later than March 2, 2015 Contact Margie Kunze at the MDA with questions at
