KATY HAYDEN


Kathleen “Katy” (Desmond) Hayden, 75, of Hingham, Mass., passed away Feb. 16 at her home.


Katy was the founder, owner and director of Winterland Skating School for 40 years. She also established and directed the Hockey Jump Start program. She received numerous awards throughout her career, including the ISI Great Skate Award, 1998; ISI Erika Amundsen Award, 2012; and ISI Woman of the Year, 2015. Katy was inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame in 2013 and was recently inducted into ISI’s Hall of Fame. She served as the District 1 representative to the ISI board of directors for many years.


“In our business, there are strong- willed people with diverse agendas, and Katy managed to pull them all together and unify them,” said ISI Executive Director Peter Martell.

BILL HOWARD


William “Bill” E. Howard of Concord, N.C., passed away March 12. Bill died of natural causes at PruittHealth-Town Center in Harrisburg, N.C., just a week after celebrating his 93rd


birthday.


A past treasurer of the Ice Skating Institute, he was inducted into the ISI Hall of Fame in 1996.


Bill opened the Holiday Ice Rink in a former garage in 1962, before building a facility in a new location in 1967. For another 30 years, Holiday Ice Rink offered a safe and fun environment for skaters.


Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sarah Jane, and his son Bruce. He is survived by his daughter, Jane Conversano, and son Stuart Howard, in addition to four grandsons.


RICHARD GAW


J. Richard Gaw, 89, of Owensboro, Ky., passed away Feb. 18 at his home.


A past president of the Ice Skating Institute, Gaw brought the first ice rink and hockey to Owensboro. He was manager of Owensboro Sportscenter from 1957 to 1977 and served as manager of various Kentucky State Parks.


He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alma Knott Gaw, and children, Tom, Barbara Roach, Monica Moore, Jimmy, Angie Mudrick and Teresa Tatum, as well as 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and two sisters.
