Next Symposium: Dayton, Ohio To the Outdoor Adventure Capital of the Midwest in 2017
W
e are excited to bring you more information on the American Trails International Trails Symposium which will take place in Dayton, Ohio May 7-10, 2017. As always, American Trails looks for great partners and inspiring conference locations, and southwestern Ohio is truly a center for outdoor recreation of all kinds, including cycling, mountain biking, hiking, and backpacking, plus trails for equestrian, motorized, and paddling enthusiasts. All this and more was made possible because the Dayton community understands the importance of outdoor recreation as an economic driver, as well as a way to increase access to the outdoors and to encourage healthy, active lifestyles. In fact, the nine-county region is believed to be home to the nation’s largest paved trail network, with more than 330 cultural destinations, and parks.
Dayton serves as a major spoke in the system with several trails converging in the city:
• The North Country National Scenic Trail passes through Dayton, the largest designated Trail Town on the seven-state trail.
• The Buckeye Trail, which circumnavigates the state of Ohio for 1,444 miles, also passes through downtown Dayton.
• The Twin Valley Trail, a 22-mile backpacking trail, is 30 minutes away and has been featured in Backpacker Magazine.
• Three of Ohio’s State Water Trails (the Stillwater, Great Miami and Mad rivers) and two of Ohio’s State Scenic Rivers (the Stillwater and Little Miami rivers) also traverse the area.
Candace Mitchell, American Trails’ executive assistant and communi- cations specialist made the trip to Dayton to see for herself. “I met with so many people who had such great passion— not only for trails but also for their community,” she said. “I was also impressed with the variety of trails— all within close proximity to downtown — for us to showcase on mobile workshops and other outings for the Symposium attendees.” The partnerships among agencies, organizations, and communica-
tions are also inspiring, she added. “Partnerships are a big part of trails, across county, city, or State lines, or working with the local military base and universities. Dayton’s partners are on track to do big things and have a lot to show our Symposium attendees.”
