COALITION FOR RECREATIONAL TRAILS Trail project awards for 2017


The Coalition for Recreational Trails annual awards recognize outstanding use of Recreational Trails Program funds. The awards are part of efforts to build awareness and appreciation of this highly successful Federal Highway Administration funding pro- gram for trails nationwide. Programs and project sponsors honored for 2017 are listed by category of award:


Maintenance and Rehabilitation Alaka’i Swamp Trail - Hawaii


The Alaka’i Swamp Trail is a 3.5- mile long pathway located in a Forest Reserve on the island of Kauai. The trail is situated in a marshland that is one of the world’s highest elevation wetlands.


In 2016, the State’s Na Ala Hele


Program completed a major rehabili- tation project to replace the dilapidat- ed boardwalk and restore safe access to a unique Hawaiian ecosystem. The project involved helicopter op- erations, the help of volunteers, and labor provided by Kupu, an Ameri- Corps partner.


Multiple-Use Management and Corridor Sharing


Middle Fork National Recreation Trail Improvements - Oregon


This 27-mile riverside trail wan- ders up the Middle Fork of the Wil- lamette River, accessing old growth  This project allowed several goals to be accomplished at once. Creeks were bridged with puncheon and trail bridges, creating safe and stable trail crossings that prevent damage   and damaged trail onto a nearby side slope and improved the approach angle and grade for two other trail bridge approaches.

This trail is an outstanding model


of how strong partnerships can create quality outdoor recreational facilities. Local governments, schools, and non-  connections while encouraging active

Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Trail - Delaware and Maryland

The project constructed a 14.5- mile trail along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers which con- nects the Delaware Bay at Delaware City, DE with the Chesapeake Bay at historic Chesapeake City, MD. The project has transformed an unpaved canal maintenance trail into a premier destination for hikers, runners, walk- 
