Why You Should be Using Social Media By Angela Breer

Social media can be daunting, especially when it’s not  integrate it into your business practices.

1. Don’t be all things to all people Depending on the type of law you practice one or two social media channels may make more sense than others for your business. If Twitter feels like a chore, maybe Facebook and LinkedIn are where you pour your time and resources. If post- ing an aesthetically-pleasing photo seems daunt- ing, don’t explore Instagram. You don’t need to be on every platform, pick one, maybe two, and do them well! If you deal with businesses in your practice, explore spending more time and energy on LinkedIn.

2. Builds community Consider your followers on social media to be your community base, the foundation that pushes your business along without having to pay for it. As the base grows so does awareness around your practice, and you’ve increased visibility among the people who matter most. It’s also a great way to do some market research, for free. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and create opportunities for people to answer and engage with your social media pages. People are always willing to give their opinions; social media is a great way to col- lect that information.

3. Humanizes your work Social media can be a great way to show how you care about your clients, and how the work you do changes and impacts their lives. Think of ways you can document the success you have in your business on social media. For example, did you help a client with an adoption, you could share (with permission) a photo of you with the   ent after winning a big trial. Not all the details of every client you assist needs to be documented,  

behind the practice, who truly care about client needs.

4. Establishes you as the expert Social media can be a great way to educate others about your services. It’s also a great place to share industry news that could be helpful for your followers. Consider what tid bit of advice you could share periodically without giving away legal services for free.

5. Don’t overcomplicate it

What feels authentic is more likely to be received as authentic. Don’t overcomplicate your social media accounts. Take a moment and consider if someone landed on your social media account what would you want them to see about your practice and share that type of content. Remem- ber, when in doubt, refer to No. 1.
