Local Veterans Honored with Quilts of Valor Ceremony


Union ARP Church in Richburg, SC held a Quilts of Valor Ceremony on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Three local veterans, Norman Paquin, Jim Sanders, and Joe Gaston, carried home a hand-made quilt of comfort and healing. The program began with a patriotic medley, “America, Our Own,” played


by Mr. Paul Broome. Rev. Neely Gaston opened the ceremony with prayer. Mr. Harvey Mayhill, Regional Director of Quilts of Valor, explained the Quilts of


Valor Foundation. It was founded by Catherine Roberts in 2003. Her son was serv- ing in harm’s way in Iraq. She worried for his safety and one night had a dream of  with a quilt wrapped around him. That inspired her to form a quilting group to make quilts and give them to soldiers who were serving, or had served in a combat zone. Norman Paquin received the quilt, “Welcome Home,” made by Jan Irby. Mr. Paquin served in the Air Force during the

James Hugh Sanders, Sr. received quilt, “Fly the Flag Proudly,” made by Mary Breeden. Mr. Sanders served in the Army during the Vietnam War. Joe Saye Gaston, received the quilt, “America the Beautiful,” made by the youngest Old Glory quilter. Mr. Gaston served in the Army during the Korean War.


Each quilt takes up to 100 hours to make. The quilts presented today were made by members of Old Glory Quilters, a local  They are not meant to be hung on the wall or put in a display case. They are meant to offer you comfort every day. The ceremony concluded with a blessing of the quilts.


Merge On September 10, 2023, First Presbytery hosted a special meeting. Two


churches, Lakeside ARP Church and Mooresville ARP Church merged. The church is now known as Cornerstone ARP Church and meets in the former Lakeside ARP Church building. Rev. Joseph Alghary, Pastor and Rev. Andy Ward, Associate Pastor, will lead the congregation.


Cook Installed
