Armed with two of the basic tools of the profession — a drip torch and a shovel — a lone wildland firefighter as- sesses the progress of the 6,500-acre Border Fire near San Diego last June. During the fire season, environmen- tal photojournalist Stuart Palley devotes much of his time to telling firefighters' stories and documenting the increas- ingly dangerous conflagrations they encounter.
