A giant canyon alcove in western Colorado's Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness southwest of Grand Junction is the kind of exhilarating formation that draws many to the region, including SEJ member Debra Schwartz, who died in a slot canyon in Arizona in May. Beginning on page 8, journalist Bobby Magill writes of his experience trekking through the red rock country of the American Southwest, and of the beauty and dangers of this ancient landscape.
