Animal bailee coverage (also known as professional extension) responds to patient losses that are unrelated to veterinary treatment. Examples of such losses include attacks by other animals and escapes (as demonstrated in the Dr. A, Dr. B, and Dr. C claims in this newsletter), as well as fire, wind, theft, flood, vandalism, and many other perils not related to treatment.

All practice owners should include this important endorsement in their professional liability policy and secure a plan for each of their practice locations. When signing up for animal bailee coverage and calculating the value of the animals in their care, owners should remember to consider patients that their practice(s) care for pre- and post- treatment, including patients who are kept before and after embryo and semen collection. It’s crucial that your patients’ value is calculated accurately to ensure appropriate coverage.

Click here to learn about our available animal bailee plans* or to add/increase your coverage (or call 800-228-7548).

*Note: 13 animal bailee plans are available for you to choose from. Each plan includes a limit for any one animal (up to $1,000,000 per patient), coverage during transportation (up to $1,000,000 per incident), and a limit for each practice location (up to $3,000,000). If a practice has multiple owners, only one owner needs to purchase an animal bailee plan.
