Collaboration in action SIR Foundation and Research Consensus Panels

our times a year, SIR Foundation hosts Research Consensus Panels (RCPs) to bring together a panel of multidisciplinary


subject matter experts to identify key research priorities in various areas. Each panelist presents a specific subtopic and discusses future research needs. By the end of the two-day program, the panel determines the top clinical research priority topics that may be developed into a clinical research project.


These panels have yielded journal articles, grant projects and research initiatives to improve patient care, and are the perfect example of multidisciplinary collaboration in action.


Past RCPs


Topic: From Code to Bedside— The Journey towards Artificial Intelligence in Interventional Radiology


Collaborators: • Cardiothoracic surgery • Biomedical imaging • Diagnostic radiology


• Healthcare policy and population health academics


• Data and computer scientists • The Federal Drug Administration


The panelists identified key research priorities, such as:


• Developing instruments for image segmentation, simulation, registration, multi-modality image fusion, characterization, device navigation, therapeutic decision support and outcome prediction.


• Investigating whether primary liver cancer could be the first use case to develop personalized cancer staging systems.


• Creating open and sequestered data commons that encompass ethically sourced, diverse and representative,

highly annotated biomedical information in shared collaboration with established organizations, in order to facilitate the development of FDA-cleared AI applications for IR.


Topic: Closing the Gaps in Racial Disparities in Critical Limb Ischemia Outcomes and Amputation Rates


Collaborators: • Vascular surgery • Interventional cardiology • Epidemiology


The RCP prioritized 3 research topics:


• A randomized controlled trial with PAD screening of at-risk patients with oversampling of high-risk racial groups


• A prospective trial with the introduction of an intervention to alter a social determinant of health


• A prospective trial with the implementation of an algorithm that requires criteria be met prior to an amputation


Topic: Uterine Artery Embolization for Symptomatic Adenomyosis


Collaborators: • Radiology • Abdominal radiology • Obstetrics • Gynecology • International radiologists


Topic: Genicular Artery Embolization


Collaborators: • Rheumatology • Orthopedics • Sports medicine • Anesthesiology • Pain management


Topic: Obesity Therapeutics The meeting was intended to:


• Review current evidence on obesity therapies


• Familiarize attendees with regulatory evaluation process


• Identify research deficiencies in IR bariatric interventions


The panelists agreed that:


• A weight loss of >8-10% over 6–12 months is a desirable therapeutic endpoint


Research should prioritize a blinded randomized controlled trial of IR weight loss interventions vs sham control arms, incorporating behavioral therapy
