Tomas Sweet, Pi ’53, Dies


Tomas O’Dowd Sweet, 1988 president of NYSDA(then, the Dental Society of the State of New York) and former ADA Trustee, died Feb 10. He was 88. A native of Chadwicks in Central New York, he spent his adult life in North Syracuse, where he also practiced dentistry for over 50 years. He was attending dentist at the SUNY Upstae Medical Center throughout his career. Dr Sweet was a graduate of Hamilton College, Clinton, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He was a navy veteran. He and his wife of 59 years, the former Jeanette Bray, were the


parents of 5 children. Son, Timothy was in practice with his father. Dr. Sweet’s involvement in organized dentistry also included a long tenure as the Fifth District Dental Society reporter to Te New York State Dental Journal and editorship of the Fifth District Bulletin. He was a well known Syracuse sports figure as well. An ardent golfer and Syracuse University Basketball fan, he was also leader of the Syracuse “chain gang,” in motion on the sidelines at Syracuse football games for over 35 years. Dr. Sweet’s survivors include sons, Tomas, Timothy and Joseph; daughters Susan and Kathleen; seven grandchil- dren; a sister, Ruth; nieces and nephews.
