Panera Bread Delivery Drivers Aren’t Camera-Shy Panera Bread joined the video marketing/selfie craze and asked their drivers and staff to use their smartphones to record themselves while making deliveries. The idea was to emphasize that they were still open for business and there to help their customers who were staying at home. The recordings were mostly unscripted and shot on the employees’ smartphones, making them authentic, pure, and one-of-a-kind. “The role of digital video in breaking through the feed is paramount right now, and these films bring heart and humanity to a world that needs it right now,” said Chris Hollander, Panera’s Senior VP and Head of Marketing.

Nothing to Cluck About Yum! brand KFC sent over 1 million pieces of chicken to its more than 4,000 US restaurants and gave them the sole authority to coordinate, cook, and serve the chicken however it felt would best help their community. “Seeing our franchisees coming together and helping their neighbors during this crisis has inspired us to do more,” said KFC US President Kevin Hochman. KFC also donated $400,000 to Blessings in a Backpack to provide food for children.

Keeping Spirits High Distilleries both local and national began making and donating hand sanitizer—by the tens of thousands of gallons! There are literally too many to name with more than 723 distilleries across the US who signed on for the cause. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States has a page on their website where you can search by state to see who is participating in this spirited movement, and pay them a visit for a tasting when they get back to making their “spirits”. Visit distilledspirits.org.

10 Million Slices Domino’s Pizza set out to give away 10 million slices of pizza—assuming a pizza pie is eight slices, that’s 1.25 million pizzas. That’s a lot of pizza! The pizzas were earmarked for hospitals and medical centers, as well as grocery store and other frontline workers. Domino’s said all 6,126 US locations took part in the “feed the need” giveaways.

Heeling Healers It’s said that our feet never take a day off, and that is certainly true for those who continue to put in long hours on the front lines. In March, Crocs began donating 10,000 pairs of Crocs a day to healthcare workers (over 240,000 pairs as of the writing of this article!), while Dearfoams provided free slippers to give more comfort to healthcare workers during their time off their feet.

Paws for the Cause From Manhattan Meow in New York City to Canine to Five in Detroit, pet care facilities all over the country stepped up to help healthcare workers and first responders with pet spa services, doggy daycare, complimentary dog walks and visits, free pet food, and overnight boarding. Our fur babies have been shown some serious love by loving pet caregivers.

Kudos to these and other brands for their ingenuity, creativity, and support on both national and local levels. We can all make a difference in our communities. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods, the spine of our local economy, and the spirit of our town. Eat, shop, and dine local as your neighborhoods safely come back to life. n
