Any dental assistant or dental hygienist who was eligible to perform expanded functions under the old rule will be eligible for the new permit. For example, a dental assistant who completed an approved expanded functions training course in orthodontics and has been able to perform those expanded functions will not have to undergo additional ortho- dontics training to qualify for an orthodon- tics expanded functions permit.

In order to obtain an expanded functions permit a dental assistant or dental hygienist needs to submit the following to the Mis- souri Dental Board:  a completed expanded functions permit application;

 $10 per permit applied for;  Evidence of current certification in Basic Life Support; and,

 Proof of certification as a Certified Den- tal Assistant from the Dental Assisting National Board and proof of gradua- tion from an accredited dental assisting program in which competency testing in the appropriate expanded function

category was completed; OR

 Proof of certification as a Certified Den- tal Assistant from the Dental Assisting National Board and proof of completion of a Board approved expanded functions training course; OR

 Proof of passing the Board’s Missouri Test of Basic Dental Assisting Skills and that the dental assistant has completed a Board approved expanded functions training course

As with any significant rule or statute change, the Board recognizes that there will be a transition period for implementation of these changes. The Board intends to work diligently to educate licensees about these changes and will work with licensees to help bring them into compliance with these new requirements in as timely a manner as practical.

The goal of these changes is to enhance the safe delivery of dentistry in the state of Mis- souri. That is a goal we should all aspire to.

The Board is extremely grateful to the Mis- souri Dental Association for their support and assistance throughout this enormous undertaking. Without the support and input of the MDA and many other oral healthcare stakeholders who that were involved with the process, these changes would probably not have been possible. f
