MDA loses two longtime dental leaders this summer
Traditionally, the MDA does not publish extensive obituaries on deceased members, but does recognize their passing in the new and deceased members list found in each issue. However, this summer saw the passing of two special “Georges” who were longtime lead- ers in the dental profession and in the MDA. We thank both of these gentleman for their contributions to the dental profession and to their communities.
Dr. George H. Bailey, age 63, of Dixon, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Fort Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital.
George graduated from the UMKC School of Dentistry in 1974 and that same year estab- lished his first dental practice in Dixon; a few years later in 1981 he opened a practice in Waynesville. Dr. Bailey received a Master of Public Health Degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis and in 2012 was elected to the Ameri- can College of Dentistry.
As a member of the Central Dental Society, Dr. Bailey was very active in organized dentistry. He was a Delegate to the MDA House and served on the General Reference Committee. He partici- pated in the Washington Leader- ship Conference for many years and served as an Action Team Leader. Dr. Bailey served on too- numerous-to-mention commit- tees for the MDA, always willing
to help when needed. In addition, he was a longtime EFDA trainer and in the past several years had been presenting OSHA certifica- tion courses around the state.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, and two daughters, Allyson and Rachel, and will be greatly missed by not only family and friends, but also by his dental colleagues whose lives he positively affected.
Dr. George T. Hopkins Jr., age 85, of St. Joseph, passed away Fri- day, May 31, 2013, at his home sur- rounded by his loving family. He was a veteran, having served in the Army from 1946 to 1947 in occupied Japan where he exchanged salutes with
General Douglas MacArthur on the steps of the Dai Ichi Building.
Dr. Hopkins received his DDS degree in 1953 from the University of Kansas City. He and his wife, Wanda, raised three children in St. Joseph and worked together many years in his dental practice which spanned 47 years. Dr. Hopkins was active in the North- west Dental Society, where he served as president. He also was the Missouri Dental Association president in 1974-75.
The MDA House of Delegates will miss seeing his presence—as he still annually attended the past president reception to honor the outgoing MDA president and at- tended each day’s House session.
