barking loudly, to chase the coyotes.


I happened to look back and saw a coyote on top of the ridge, only 70 yards away from us, ready to attack the back end of the herd. Luckily the other dogs in our herd saw him too, but it would have been really easy for that coyote to sneak in and grab a little kid in the commotion, had it not been for our dogs and us being there.


Mountain lions are our biggest threat. Again, when there are lots of deer on the range, the mountain lion prefers deer or their fawns. We found that young mountain lions are less careful than the older ones. They sometimes end up in a tree, treed by our dogs with the herd nearby.


Our dogs will let us know when they have treed


a big cat. They will not leave the tree and will not come to us. They will bark to us, circle the tree, look at us and look up in the tree, to try to get our attention. It is quite disturbing when you first discover a tail or a leg 70 feet up in a tree in broad daylight. We herders
