Bridges help us overcome obstacles and are the connection of what is divided. They are also metaphors for the exchange of new ideas and are our connection to people, places, nature, and health and well-being. 

Ohio is a State that has enthusias- tically and fully embraced the idea of trails, greenways, blueways, and outdoor recreation and the myriad   and throughout the State, the trails movement truly embodies the Sym- posium’s theme, “Trails Take Flight: Connecting People, Places, and Pos- sibilities.”

The Symposium continues to serve as a catalyst to shape the next genera- tion of leaders. The Hulet Hornbeck Emerging Leaders Scholarship Pro- gram, now in its third year, provides unique training and mentoring op- portunities to inspire young adults to choose a career path so they, too, can leave a lasting legacy on the world— as Hulet did.

What all of you do, as trail advo- cates, community leaders, trail design- ers and builders, government employ- ees, or volunteers who are generously helping create and manage beautiful trails around the country and the world to “build community” is very important. What a wonderful thing— that a trail can bring people together and support communities, all the while providing its users with health, beauty, and memories. Your trails of- fer inspiration as well as happiness… and… isn’t that what it’s all about? - ingful and stimulating career with so many beautiful and happy memories.
