The first thing you need to know when purchasing a horse, is this horse for an adult or a child? In most cases if they are new to horses or haven’t worked with horses in a long time they need to ride or purchase an old- er experienced horse that’s” been there and done that”. That can help teach the owner or rider as they build their confidence. They need to be sure and select a horse that is not out of their skill set. The last reason to make a selection on a horse is because “it’s a pretty horse”.
How do you prepare for competing against the other competitors?
I work with multiple different types of horses each day – breeding, mind- set, hot, cold, spooky, reactive, etc. Basically doing this on a daily basis keeps my timing and feel for horses fine-tuned and keeps me physically and mentally fit for the competition.
Our theme for February/March Issue is “Heart Healthy for You and Your Horses” any healthy tips for you and your horses?
Working with your horse/s each day keeps both you and your horse phys- ically and mentally fit.
A lot of times I see horses that are overfed and underworked. My main tip is– always feed your horse good quality forage and work/ride him dai- ly. Keeping in mind your horse’s diet depends on its age, discipline, how much it’s being worked. Ensuring that your horse receives proper nutri- tion is extremely important to his wellbeing, just as it is for you and me.
