UPSETTING MATERIAL!


NP: So the way that I first became aware of Te Killing of America was through a screening at the Fantastic Festival in Montreal, but I had never heard of it prior to that. And it absolutely bowled me over.


SR: Te film has never really been shown in the U.S., except for... Joseph Papp at the New York Public Teatre used to show it every Sunday for about a year. But it was never officially released.


Given the dearth of material on the film, could you start by telling me how the project came together? Who approached who?


SR: It was really Leonard Schrader who wanted to make it. And Leonard had a lot of experience writing scripts; really he co-wrote everything that his brother, Paul, wrote. It was explained to me once that whoever had the original idea took the title; they didn’t share titles, ever.


Tey had a very domineering father. Tey were raised in the Calvinist religion, believing that if they went to the movies they would go to hell forever. And the two boys decided that they would go to hell forever, in exchange for going to films. So it was a total commitment for
