Radio Either battery-

powered or hand crank & a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert

Cell Phone

Local Maps

These items are just the basics. Don’t forget Prescription and OTC Medications, too. It’s always a good idea to have Cash on hand and accessible but be mindful that hiding it under the mattress is probably not a good idea. There are plenty of novelty items that are good for stashing cash in plain sight. Additionally, if you have basement or cellar space, it would be wise to set up a corner of it for more long- term items like Hygiene Products, Pet Food, Small Hand Tools, etc.

Who Do You Call?

Be sure to have a communication plan in place, too. Texting people to let them know that you are okay conserves phone battery life and is less likely to jam the network. Having a pre-determined out-of-town trusted friend or family member that you can check in with is best. Because local friends/family will also likely be affected by the emergency. Other vital numbers should be noted and saved in a place accessible to everyone in the household. Aid Organizations

Depending on the size of the emergency, there may be local or even national organizations that can provide short-term assistance. Keep in mind that the level of those services may

be limited by the needs of the community and/or region, and their ability to access the area depending on the nature of the disaster. Afterwards however, the long-term resources may not be there, or be spread too thin among too many people. So, now is the time to be aware and prepare for it.
